Cover Story Headline: The Emotions of JYJ
Famous around the world, having successfully carved their names in their respective areas and idolized by millions of fans. Have done tens of concerts around the world since the launch of The Beginning album. Their new songs dominate the music charts as soon as it’s released.
Not only active in the music arena, but as one of the hottest band in Korea, JYJ’s excellent foray into acting has also caused a phenomenon as Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Miss Ripley,Protect The Boss further elevated them into icons. In short, anything that’s related to JYJ, it will most likely be a success and be certified as one of the best. That’s the JYJ magic, which is made of three young men known as Jae Joong, Yuchun and Junsu
But behind this sweet story of success, nobody would imagine that they would be facing problems appearing on Korean television. Fans can watch them as actors but not as singers. TV programs were cancelled despite having completed the recordings. Sounds harsh but that’s the reality for JYJ
The blocking started when the three 25-year-old young men filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment agency due to unfair contract. The insensible 13-year long contract, grueling work schedule and unfair distribution of royalty were amongst the reasons. This is not the first; Hangeng a former member of Super Junior and pop band HOT also filed a similar lawsuit.
The Korean High Court has allowed JYJ to proceed with their individual entertainment activities while the lawsuit gets finalized, unfortunately none of the television stations have invited JYJ to appear on their music shows.
This bureaucratic decision is highly regrettable because JYJ should be given a fair chance just like any other Korean artistes especially when they have proven their popularity
Nevertheless, JYJ is very lucky to have mass support from their fans. Each suspected unfair blocking were reported to the Korea Trade Commission, Korean Consumers Association, National Human Rights Commission and various NGOs. The non-TV appearance for Jeju Island promotion was also publicly highlighted. These extraordinary efforts by the fans have garnered much admiration by the entertainment industry insiders
To show support for JYJ, fans also managed to fun raised more than RM$ 384,000 to promote the band via advertisement placements on buses, newspapers in Korea and digital commercials at the strategic Shibuya, Tokyo Japan.
And without any promotions on television and mass media, JYJ’s latest album In Heavenmanaged to sell more than 300,000 copies. Their Japan concerts in conjunction with the launch of In Heaven album, which was held yesterday and today were all sold out (60,000 seats). 80% of the tickets for the next concert in Barcelona have been sold and ticket site’s server for Berlin concert crashed on the first day due to an overwhelming response
“We are very grateful to the fans because in our happy and sad time, they are always with us. They never fail to support and attend our concerts. I am always touched when ever I see fans fill up the stadiums no matter where it is held. It made us realized that we are not alone in our chosen path despite all the hardships that we had to endure. Fan’s passion has made us stronger and because of that, we will never give up. We will continue to fight for the sake of the fans,” said Junsu. It was also mentioned that In Heaven is a gift from JYJ to the fans
They are also a sought after brand ambassadors for major companies TiO Tea, LG -the telecommunications company, NII- the famous clothing line, Lotte - biggest retail stores in Korea, Nature’s Republic – a make up and skincare – Nature Republic. Not only good in singing and dancing, JYJ are also capable in composing their own music as proven with In Heaven album where 80% of the songs were composed by themselves
According to Jae Joong, In Heaven album is like a letter sharing their ups and downs. The melody and lyrics of songs in the album clearly pictured the turbulence of emotions and their hope for a better future.
“We can’t appear on television to meet the fans so we take the opportunity to showcase our best at our concerts. Honestly, all the songs in the album are for our concert performance. This album was produced sincerely from our hearts and as the producer of the album; we worked closely with each other to determine the colour of the album so that it will portray the real JYJ” added Jae Joong
In this album, there’s a rap song that’s eight (8) minutes long entitled “ A Song Without A Name” composed by Yuchun. Lyrics of the song detailed possible reasons why they left SM Entertainment to set out on their own.
It was explained by Yuchun that the lyrics of the song are the truth
It can be interpreted that he chose this path with JYJ even though it’s difficult. He chose to fight for his future with JYJ because he does not want to die in regret. In the end, they are also grateful to have found a new family in the form of fans as families who appreciate and love them
“This is an effort made because as a human, on the day that I die, I do not want to have any regret. Yes, in the end, it’s JYJ”
The release of the new album with nine songs on Sept 27 set another record for JYJ whenGet Out, Fallen Leaves and In Heaven climbed the digital charts on most of the music online portals in Korea like Melon, Mnet, Bugs, Dosirak and Cyworld BGM
